Autism assessment

Clear, supportive autism assessments for children and adults. Understand what’s happening and what to do next.

If you are wondering whether you or your child may be autistic, an assessment can provide clarity, understanding and a clear path forward.

At Evolve Ireland, our autism assessments are carried out in a structured, supportive and respectful way. We aim to help you understand how you or your child experiences the world, and what support may be helpful.

Who this assessment is for?

An autism assessment may be helpful if you or your child are experiencing:

  • Differences in social communication or interaction
  • Difficulty understanding social cues or relationships
  • A preference for routine or predictability
  • Sensory sensitivities, such as to noise, light or textures
  • Intense or focused interests
  • Feeling overwhelmed in social or busy environments

We work with both children and adults, and tailor each assessment to the individual.

Signs of autism

People often seek an assessment when they notice patterns such as:

  • Difficulty understanding or navigating social situations
  • Feeling different from others or finding social interaction exhausting
  • Preferring routines and finding change difficult
  • Sensory sensitivities affecting daily life
  • Challenges with communication, either expressing or understanding

Signs of autism in kids

For children, this may show up as:

  • Difficulty with peer relationships
  • Differences in play or communication
  • Sensory sensitivities or strong reactions to change
For adults

Signs of autism in adults

For adults, this may include:

  • Long-standing social difficulties
  • Feeling overwhelmed in work or social environments
  • Recognising traits later in life

If these experiences are impacting daily life, an assessment can help provide understanding and direction.

What happens during the assessment

What the assessment includes

Our autism assessment is comprehensive and evidence based. It typically includes:

  • A detailed developmental history
  • A clinical interview
  • Exploration of communication, social interaction and behaviour
  • Consideration of sensory experiences and preferences
  • Input from parents, school or others where appropriate
  • Activity based session
The assessment may also include structured observational activities. These are designed to understand how an individual communicates, interacts and responds in different situations in a natural and supportive setting. Each assessment is tailored, so not every element is used in every case.

What happens during the assessment

Assessments are carried out in a calm and supportive environment. You can expect:
  • A conversation to understand experiences and development
  • Questions about communication, relationships and daily life
  • Observational or structured activities where appropriate
These activities are not tests that you can pass or fail. They are simply used to understand how you or your child communicates and interacts. We guide you through each step and ensure the process feels clear and manageable. If you would like more detail about the full process, you can read our guide to What to Expect During an Autism Assessment.
After the assessment

After the assessment

Following the assessment, you will receive:

  • A clear explanation of the findings
  • A detailed written report
  • Recommendations tailored to your needs

This may include guidance for:

  • School or educational supports
  • Workplace adjustments
  • Communication strategies
  • Further supports or services

Our aim is that you leave with clarity, understanding and next steps.

How long does an autism assessment take?

The length of the assessment can vary depending on individual needs. In general:

  • The assessment may take place over one or more sessions
  • Time is allowed to gather background information and complete any observational activities

We will explain the expected timeline clearly before the assessment begins.

Not sure if this is the right assessment?

If you are unsure whether an autism assessment is the right next step, we can help. We will talk through your concerns and guide you towards the most appropriate option.

Considering ADHD and Autism?

It is not uncommon for individuals to experience traits of both ADHD and autism. In some cases, it may not be clear which assessment is most appropriate.

We offer combined ADHD and autism assessments where this is relevant. This allows us to explore both areas in a structured and comprehensive way, without the need for separate assessments.

If you are unsure whether ADHD, autism, or both may be present, we can guide you towards the most appropriate assessment based on your needs.
